Agriculture is increasingly becoming a strategic trade issue. The European Commission's latest figures show the resilience of EU agri-food trade: a €23.9 billion surplus in the first half of 2026, even as trade flows continue to shift significantly between markets. Behind the headline numbers, however, is a more interesting story. Agricultural trade today sits at the intersection of food security, geopolitics, climate resilience, trade policy and supply-chain security. Changes in one market can rapidly create opportunities—or vulnerabilities—elsewhere. This makes market intelligence increasingly important. Understanding demand, production capacity and price is no longer enough. Companies and policymakers also need to understand regulation, trade agreements, sustainability requirements, logistics, political risk and the direction of public policy. The EU-Mercosur relationship is a particularly interesting example: opening markets while simultaneously introducing safeguards for sensitive agricultural sectors. For agricultural producers, traders and investors, navigating this increasingly complex institutional environment may become as important as understanding the commodity itself. 🇺🇦 From 3 to 14 August, Ukraine participated in NATO Exercise Baltic Trust 2026 in Latvia, focused on countering drones and other threats associated with the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).  The exercise brought together approximately 650 participants from 24 countries. Military personnel, specialists and industry representatives tested emerging technological solutions in a threat-informed environment reflecting the realities of contemporary warfare. 🛡️ Baltic Trust focused not on individual technologies alone, but on their ability to operate as an integrated system. Participants tested how sensors, command-and-control systems and counter-UAS capabilities can exchange data, build a common operational picture and enable coordinated responses. Exercises like Baltic Trust help assess technologies in field conditions, identify their limitations and refine solutions against real operational requirements. 🤝 Jointly testing and integrating these solutions helps turn technological innovation into operational capabilities that strengthen readiness and collective defence.

UNITE – Brave NATO: applications open for the first joint Ukraine–NATO innovation grant program It is the first joint innovation grant program designed to bring together Ukrainian defense companies and companies from NATO member states to develop cutting-edge technologies for the battlefield. 🎯 The first call focuses on developing counter-UAV technologies and strengthening air defense capabilities and for the first time will be administered through Ukraine’s Prozorro platform. Funding of up to €250,000 or €500,000 per partner will be available for joint projects in the following areas: - Active Protection Systems against FPV Drones; - Advanced and Affordable Counter-Shahed Systems; - Electromagnetic Support for Signals Intelligence (SIGINT); - Electromagnetic Attack (EA) technology against FPV drones; - High-Altitude Platforms. ⏰ The deadline to submit an Expression of Interest is August 3. One of the most important developments in Ukraine’s recovery is the growing focus on combining reform, risk mitigation and private investment. The recent World Bank Group announcements illustrate that financing alone is not enough. Mobilising investment at scale also requires credible institutions, political-risk instruments, well-prepared projects and effective cooperation between Ukraine, MDBs, donors and private investors. The emerging cooperation between the World Bank Group and EBRD is particularly significant. Greater coordination between development institutions can reduce duplication, improve project preparation and provide investors with clearer pathways into the Ukrainian market. The next challenge is translating these frameworks into an investable pipeline and implementation capacity on the ground.

The EU’s latest sanctions package against Russia is another reminder that geopolitical developments and business strategy can no longer be treated separately. For companies operating across Europe, Ukraine, Central Asia and neighbouring markets, sanctions affect much more than legal compliance. They influence supply chains, counterparties, investment decisions, financing structures and reputational risk. This is why organisations need to connect regulatory monitoring with commercial strategy and operational decision-making. Understanding where EU policy is heading—and engaging early with the relevant institutions and partners—is increasingly important. At the same time, sanctions policy must be considered alongside the longer-term objective: supporting Ukraine’s resilience, recovery and integration into the European economy.

this night in town of Vyshneve, Ukraine. While most of us are already enjoying summer holidays relaxing - Ukraine is on fire more than ever. Last night, in this suburb of Kyiv nearly 5 streets destroyed. Around 500 people evacuated due to the threat of detonation. 3 killed, 26 injured - among them a 9-month-old baby and a 12-year-old child. Dozens of residential buildings damaged with fires still burning. I catch myself on the photo reports being scared to recognise someone I know. A familiar street. A building I walked past. And then it hits me that I care about each single person this tragedy touches every single day. Each of them had plans today: to go to work, take kids to the playground, cook a meal, go for a walk - like you or me. Each single human being who did nothing wrong to have their life destroyed in a blink of an eye. Just because they were born Ukrainian, in a “wrong place” . Because their country did not get occupied and keeps fighting. Every civilian for the last four years - a nine month old baby, an 87 year old - punished just for the fact of their existence. I know it is hard to grasp. Hard to relate to, if your country has never been at war, if you have never heard explosions, never lost someone to this. I say this for one reason only. Please do not stop caring. Do not get used to another horrible night of news. Talk about it. Find ways to help people around you not forget about each person who daily loses a home, a life, a future - to a war they never chose, never started, never intended to be part of. As long as we care - we are human. As long as we care - we have a chance to defeat this.

An important OECD contribution at a time when countries are facing the dual challenge of attracting investment while strengthening resilience and competitiveness. From an MDB and development finance perspective, the real test lies in translating policy recommendations into a pipeline of investable projects supported by strong institutions, governance and implementation capacity. This is particularly relevant for Ukraine and other transition economies seeking to mobilise public and private capital at scale.
